CHOICE

I have always wondered;
How important is CHOOSING?
Wise men do not seem to give up easily
To install the importance of choosing in me
Mr. Frost talk about “choosing the road lesser traveled”
“Choice- not chance determines your destiny”: Says Aristotle
Mr. Vonnegut says: “be careful about what we pretend to be”
And Dumbledore doesn’t falter when he says the words of J.K Rowling
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

So much so have been said about it
So much so have been written about it
So much so have been expected of it
That I begin to wonder, may be they are correct
And it’s me who fail to connect

But then I get back to age old question
I have had in my mind
It ruled my teens and messed my adult life

You see my point is: that if I go back to the origin
Of everything, like going back to fundamentals
And with CHOICE being so much important in the eyes
Of these great men, thinkers and philosophers
How do they justify, the choices laid upon a kid?

I don’t think I choose a particular country, city, town or village to be born in
I don’t think I choose a particular couple to be born to
I don’t think I choose a particular school to be my first school
I don’t think I choose my caste, my creed, my race, my sexual orientation
I don’t think I choose the color of my hair and the tone of my voice
I don’t think I choose to be dumb at school; it just happened I wasn’t the brightest kid in class
I don’t think I choose to paint, or to write, it just happened that I could
These were by defaults bestowed on me
I did not choose all these basic, foundations
Hence, where is the importance of CHOOSING?

And now as an adult, I think I am a product of other people’s choices
Thrown upon me all this while
My doings might seem like these are my choices
but in reality these are pseudo choice or virtual reality if you may.
These are basically the ideas installed in me by them
The people I lived with, the people I met with, the people I grew up with
I am a factor of their dreams, wishes that were decided for me
Hence, where is the importance of CHOOSING?
